Question about hair dye?
I’ve dyed my hair a lot in my life, twice a year since I was twelve I guess. And the last time, I got this red/brown colour (from a box) and didn’t think about my roots (which are dirty blonde) so my roots turned bright red, and the rest of my hair stayed the same (it’s a dark brown). I want to dye my hair again now, but I’m so paranoid about my roots! Was it just because it was red? would I be safe with another brown? Please tell me what to do about this.
If your roots are a different colour than the rest of your hair, then that’s why the red took to it more. Think of dyeing hair like colouring with markers. If you have a blonde/blank slate and colour with a red, you’re going to get a bright red. If you colour red over a brown it’ll turn out murkier and not so bright.
Also if you plan on dyeing over that red, think again! haha Red will show through any dye job in a matter of days-weeks. You will see that hint of red through the new dye, no matter how dark. If you want the red completely gone you should get a hair stripper and strip the red out.
Trust me, my favourite colour to dye my hair is red.
Whether you think you kjnow about coloring hair you don’t know all the chemistry and so far you’ve been lucky. Twice a year but you don’t give your age. It’s not really that much experience to know how everything will work on your hair.
What happened with your color is that you tried to go lighter than the brown that was on your hair. So your roots took what the box color intended and the rest of your hair stayed dark brown because TINT CANNOT LIGHTEN TINT. . . . . EVER. If you want something lighter then you have to use bleach or color remover. Since your hair is naturally light it really grabbed the red and if you look on the back of the box it probably doesn’t show results with your natural color. They usually don’t show using it on really drastically different natural colors. Now that you’ve colored your roots they also won’t lighten without bleach or color remover. That’s not as easy as some will make it sound. And it’s extrememly damaging if you don’t know what you’re doing and don’t use the right products.
Now that you are aware that you don’t know what you should maybe it’s time to go to a professional. It will now be considered corrective color and the only way you’ll end up with a successful color.
