YOu want the ring. The ring you can spin and keep clean a lot easier than then barbell. Keep the ring for at least 6 months. . then change to what you really want. I like the ring a lot better than the barbell. I had mine pierced 8 years ago. Had a ring. . then went to the barbell style. The end ball would come off and I would lose the rest of it and not even know it. With the ring with the ball. . . you can have that super tight on it and it doesn’t fall off. I like that much better. I let mine close up 3 years ago. Just came across my last navel ring the other day. . and decided to try and put it back in. I got it in!! YIPEEDOOOO!!! So now. . I have the ring in and no problems with losing it!!

Both are used in navel piercings, but barbells are more common because they don’t get in the way as much as CBRs (rings). Rings tend to get caught on clothes and other things more often than barbells. Barbells are better during exercise, too.

Navel piercings take 6-12 months to fully heal and cannot be changed until then. I’m very surprised your piercer didn’t tell you that.

Most tattoo/piercing shops allow you to choose the jewelry you want, but some piercers only pierce with the jewelry they prefer.

A trained piercer knows that rings are always easier to keep clean that a curved barbell. This is due to the fact you can keep the piercing clean inside and out ENTIRELY by spinning the ring. In saying this do NOT start spinning that ring just yet**** For Months to come you will have lymph fluid coming from the site. This is the normal healing process. In the beginning the scabs you get will prevent bacteria from getting it. Don’t pick at them. Wait for them to fall off or wait for the jewelry to move on its own before spinning the ring. Only spin it to clean it, and don’t play with it. Sea salt soaks are a healing navel’s friend so keep up with those. Also be patient with this piercing. They do take a long time to heal (9-12 months). You stand a better chance of healing properly & healing faster having the ring. Wait 4 months to change it out & try to avoid dangles for the first year-wait until it is completely healed. In my opinion, heavy dangle jewelry for long periods of time can thin a piercing till it rejects. It’s stretches and pulls the skin/piercing due to the weight of it. Watch what you wear. Happy healing =)

I only pierce navels with curved barbells, unless the person’s anatomy would make different jewelry a better choice. Rings are notorious for causing migration and rejection because they get caught more and move around constantly. Barbells move a lot less, which keeps irritation to a minimum and makes infection less likely because you are not constantly dragging dead skin cells, debris, and bacteria through your piercing. You do not need to worry about cleaning inside the piercing. Your body is already “clean” on the inside, and any foreign material will either be pushed out (via the lymph that is secreted from the piercing) or will be neutralized by your white blood cells. I would go to a different piercer and request to have a barbell put in instead. Make sure they know it is fresh so they use sterile jewelry. You may have gone to a “good” studio to get pierced, but the piercer is not keeping up with the times. Any piercer who continues to study the industry would know that rings are good for nothing but rejection.
