Belly Button Piercing / Naval Piercing – When can I change ring, what jewellery to buy?

By , December 24, 2010 8:56 am

I had my bally button pierced in May (3 months ago). It actuallyg ot a little bit infected a month or so ago, but with a dose of antibiotics, it has now completely healed up and seems to have healed. I can easily slide the ring up and done the piercing, and can not feel any discomfort. When can I change the jewellery? What do I need to look for when buying navel jewellery? (etc. materials).

THanks heaps for your help. Kind regards, Val

stainless steal bars r good for it not to get infected. . . also im pretty sure u would be able to change it now. . . if it doesnt hurt and its feeling pretty healed up. . go for it. . . just try sliding it out and sliding it back in. .

It sounds like your piercing should be okay to change by now, so that’s a good thing! As for the jewelery, I’d suggest looking for stuff that’s from a jewelery or piercing-offering store, they tend to have better quality stuff that you can trust not to irritate your skin. It’s going to be a higher price, but it’s worth it in the long run.

And just from personal experience, I would suggest a colourful barbell style, rather than a ring or ANYTHING with a “dangley extra” on it. A big thing to keep in mind is that whatever you put in will catch on something now and again, and the more stuff there is for it to catch on the more likely you are to tear the piercing along the way. I’ve put a link to a picture of the type I find are the best below, but really it’s just whatever you think will be okay for you (and how often you plan on changing your ring)

you should be fine to change your jewelry now. i recommend using surgical steel, or titanium because there is less chance of those metals irritating your skin.

i recommend buying your jewelry from a piercing shop as opposed to buying them from hottopic or clairs or some place like that, because it is better quality jewelry and the piercer will make sure that you get the jewelry thats right for you.

Titanium, surgical steel, bioplast, and nylon are good piercing mats, nothing with nickel, plated metals are bad b/c the plating wears off. Is it really healed? If you can slide your current jewelry around in the piercing and it doesn’t stick of hurt, you may be able to change it on your own. Although a pierving studio, especially the one where you got it done, will be glad to change it the first time for you and they don’t charge to do that. You also should make sure whatever new jewelry you get isn’t heavy, that’s bad for newer piercings, and like any piercing it can stretch out the hole, which is gross.
