Tell her not to waste her money. I’m from Toronto myself, and I know the school, they ‘teach’ piercing there as well. No studio will take her seriously if she learns there. These schools are a scam. The Toronto one offers 60 hours of instruction and has a goal of you performing 5 tattoos then you’re done? It’s a joke.
For her to become a real tattoo artist, she will need to do an apprenticeship. To get one, she will have to work her butt off. Tell her to make sure she has a good portfolio with a variety of styles. (artists will look specifically at shading, clean lines and such). She would also do well to have current first aid and CPR certification (Red Cross or St. John’s Ambulance) as well as her blood-borne pathogens certification. Then go and try to develop a relationship with artists around the city. Remember, a lot of the time it’s who you know.
Tell her to bring her certifications, portfolio and resume and go to studios. Don’t call, this really has to be done in person. Ask if they are looking for apprentices or counter help. Most start out as a counter person (it’s a great way to assess if a person can handle talking to clients) and doing the crummy work at the studio like washing floors.
Remember, most studios get half a dozen people a week wanting to be an artist, you need to stand out from the crowd and show that you’re actually really dedicated to becoming an artist.
Good Luck!
